New York artist drawing Finnish birds via Kickstarter funding 10.07.2012

Among the residents at the Arteles artist residency in July is Stephanie Chambers, a painter from Brooklyn, NY. She is a 2003 graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design and has been making artwork exclusively about nature for the last 5 years. Chambers came to Arteles to create a body of artwork based on the indigenous bird population of Finland. Also some traditional Scandinavian and Finnish design elements will be included in her work.

In order to fund the project "Birds of Finland" Chambers launched a Kickstarter project. Kickstarter is a peer funding platform for creative projects, where each project is supported by the public in return for rewards. The projects are defined by the artist in the project plan. For example as a return of $ 50 pledge, Chambers agrees to send the donators an original 5.5 x 7.5 inches bird drawing created on-site in Finland. The drawing comes with a signed certificate of authenticity and is produced with the highest quality of materials.

Chambers launched the project on 23rd of May. In June 3rd the editors of Kickstarter selected it as the project of the day out of thousands. In total the project got $ 5,239 pledged from 107 individual donators around the world and was 209% funded. Stephanie knew personally or had some kind of a previous connection to about 45 of them. The rest were mainly from Finland, or persons from U.S. who had Finnish grandparents or other Finnish relatives. Also many Japanese were interested in the project. "One man ordered six drawings as a wedding gift for a wedding held in a town called Pietarsaari. I also received hints about great places to watch birds, one actually very closeby Arteles in Hämeenkyrö", says Chambers.

Her works can be seen in a group show in Giacobetti Paul Gallery in Brooklyn, NY.
At the end of July she has a show in INDEXG Gallery in Tortonto, Canada, and in October a solo show in Giacobetti Paul Gallery in Brooklyn, NY.

Arteles Artist Award 2011 to Hélène Baril (Fr) 27.02.2012

French artist Hélene Baril was awarded as the Arteles Artist of the year 2011. The award includes a 3-month-period in the Arteles residency program in Hämeenkyrö and its value is 5000 euros. The award is given once a year for one international artist, who has realized an exhibition or public art project in Finland.

Baril was selected as a winner through her two public art works “Lancia Delta HF 4WD” and “Octavius the second”. Selection committee mentions that the works of Baril are both, performative and site-specific. Her art works rise from a long term planning process, modify the environment and set its future purposes in a positive manner. Through her practice she suggests, that the purpose of an artist is to make a mark into the visited space, instead of just traditionally producing traditional art objects.

Arteles is a modern residency centre, created in 2009, which is situated in the middle of the forest and provides a space for artists from different fields and backgrounds to work together in order to develop the autonomous space with new futurist projects and networks.

A similar comparison can be found in the Black Mountain College, a place founded in 1933, in the middle of the forest, which invited young creators (such as John Cage, Robert Rauschenberg, Allan Kaprow, among others) to make something that wasn’t possible to create elsewhere.
During the most recent call for proposals, Arteles received 214 applications from professional artists around the world. Of these, 35 artists were chosen for the 2011 period. The jury’s primary basis for acceptance was: "The stranger the idea, the better”. Come hear about what these chosen artists are doing!

International students of the Jyväskylä University and students from the Art and Culture Research Department can negotiate credits with lector, Kimmo Lehtonen (kimmo.e.lehtonen(at)jyu.fi) and students from the Jyväskylä University of Applied Science can negotiate credits with the AV-production lector, Aimo Hyvärinen (aimo.hyvarinen(at)jamk.fi). The conferences are part of a contemporary art course organized by the Jyväskylä Art Museum in congruence with the Live Herring ’11 events.

The Conference days are organized as a joint project between, Arteles, the Jyväskylä Art Museum, the Jyväskylä University’s Department of Art and Culture Research, Live Herring workgroup / The Central Finnish Council for the Arts, The Centre for Creative Photography and the Jyväskylä University of Applied Science.

The performance called COR explores the function of heart as a metaphor for an organic essence of the deepest. It is based on group process and several improvisations.
